Correspondence relates to Hale's roles as minister,father, educator, Secretary of the General Association of CongregationalChurches and Ministers of Massachusetts, and Secretary of the HampshireMissionary Society. Diaries contain brief daily entries describing the weather,notable activities and events, sermons written and preached, town meetingsattended, marriages performed, visitors received, journeys taken and choresperformed. Also included is information regarding births and deaths inWesthampton. The diaries provide fifty years of consistent and valuabledocumentation of the daily activities of a Congregational minister in a smallNew England town. Notes and memoranda reflect Hale's interest in politics, hisadministrative and ministerial duties, and Biblical studies. Over 1200 sermonswith indexes are included. Enoch Hale, born in Coventry, Connecticut on October28, 1753, was the brother of the famed Nathan Hale. He graduated from YaleCollege in 1773 and served as a Congregational clergyman in Westhampton,Massachusetts from 1778-1828. He also served as Secretary of the GeneralAssociation of the Congregational Churches and Ministers of Massachusetts from1804-1824, and was Secretary of the Hampshire Missionary Society for manyyears. He was involved in the educational and public interests of his communityand represented Westhampton in the State Constitutional Convention of 1820. Hedied on January 19, 1837.

The Congregational Church in the small western Massachusetts town of Westhampton was formally organized on Sept. 1, 1779, with the assistance of ministers from two adjoining towns. Jonathan Judd of Southampton and Solomon Williams of Northampton.
